Formal-Ready Piercings: Age Rules, Healing Time and When to Book

Formal season is almost here. Across the Sunshine Coast, Year 12s are locking in dresses, suits, hair appointments and fake tan. And a new piercing is often high on the list.

If that's you (or your teen), here's the important bit: piercings need time to heal, and there are some age rules to know before you walk in. Plan it right and you'll be formal-ready with a sparkle to match.

The age and consent rules

Many Year 12 students are still under 18 at formal time, so these rules from our piercing age restrictions page apply:

  • A parent or legal guardian must attend the appointment to give consent for anyone under 18.
  • Bring proof of guardianship. The parent or guardian needs a Medicare or healthcare card showing both their name and the student's name.
  • Parent or guardian photo ID: the parent or guardian needs to bring valid photo ID on the day.
  • No dermal or nipple piercings under 18. Ears, nose and navel are the go-to options for formal, and you can see them all on our Sunshine Coast piercing page.

Already 18? You'll still need valid photo ID, so pop it in your bag.

Why you need to book early

This is where most people get caught out. A new piercing isn't just "done" when you leave the studio. It keeps healing for weeks or months afterwards, and during that time you'll be wearing your initial titanium jewellery.

Here's roughly what to expect:

  • Lobes usually need at least 6–8 weeks before they're ready for a change-over.
  • Cartilage (helix, tragus, conch and friends) typically takes much longer. Many piercings heal within 3–6 months, while some take up to 12 months or longer.
  • Nose and navel piercings are also a longer heal, often several months.

So if you want to wear your formal earrings in a brand-new lobe piercing, you'll want to book in at least 6–8 weeks before the big night. With formals landing in October and November, that means now is the time to get in.

And please don't swap the jewellery yourself the week before. We don't advise changing your own jewellery over. Book a complimentary change-over so your piercer can check the piercing has fully healed first. (Our change-over service is only offered with our own jewellery, so ask us about what's in stock.)

Cutting it close? You've still got options

If formal is only a few weeks away, you can still get pierced. Just go in knowing you'll wear your initial jewellery on the night. The good news is that ASTM F136 titanium studs look sharp and polished, and a tiny cartilage stud can look stunning with an up-do.

A few tips for a fresh piercing on formal night:

  • Plan your hair. Tell your hairdresser about your new piercing so they don't tug or pin across it.
  • Keep products clear. Hairspray, fake tan, makeup and setting spray should stay away from the piercing site.
  • Hands off. No twisting or fiddling while you're getting photos, no matter how cute it looks.
  • Sleep smart. After-party sleepover? A travel pillow helps avoid pressure on fresh ear piercings.

And after formal comes schoolies. Remember that the ocean, pools and hot tubs are off-limits for the entire initial healing period, typically at least 6–8 weeks. Our piercing aftercare guide has all the details.

Getting ready for your appointment

  • Eat within 4 hours beforehand, and let your piercer know if you get woozy around needles.
  • Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen within 24 hours of your appointment. If you take any regular medication, check with your GP first.
  • Bring your parent or guardian, their Medicare or healthcare card, and valid ID.

Formal season is a busy time, so if your plans change, let us know early. Cancellations within 48 hours of your appointment attract a fee under our piercing cancellation policy.
