Piercing After Care Recommendations

Piercing Aftercare Guide

Proper aftercare is crucial for a happy and healthy piercing. Following these steps will help ensure your new addition heals beautifully. Remember, healing times can vary from person to person.

The Golden Rules of Aftercare

  • Hands Off! The most important rule is to avoid touching your new piercing. Touching, twisting, or playing with the jewellery can introduce bacteria, leading to irritation, infection, or prolonged healing.
  • Keep it Dry: Never leave the piercing site wet or moist after cleaning, as this can create a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • No Foreign Bodies of Water: Avoid soaking or submerging your piercing in any body of water—this includes pools, oceans, lakes, baths, and hot tubs—for the entire initial healing period (typically at least 6-8 weeks).

Daily Cleaning Routine (Twice a Day)

  1. Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your piercing.
  2. Clean Gently: Spray the front and back of the piercing with a sterile saline solution. Do not use alcohol, peroxide, or ointments, as these can damage healing tissue. If you don't have saline, letting clean, running water from your shower flow over it is also effective.
  3. Pat Dry Carefully: Use a fresh piece of non-woven gauze or a paper towel to gently pat the area dry. You can also use a hairdryer on the cool setting, held at a safe distance, to ensure the area is completely dry. Avoid using cloth towels, which can snag on jewellery and harbour bacteria.

What to Avoid During Healing

  • Pressure & Friction: Avoid sleeping directly on your new piercing. For ear piercings, a travel pillow with a hole in the middle can be a lifesaver. Be mindful of anything that could cause pressure, like tight clothing, headphones, helmets, or glasses.
  • Harsh Chemicals: Keep beauty products like makeup, lotions, and sprays away from the piercing site.
  • Changing Jewellery Too Soon: Do not remove or change your initial jewellery until your piercer has confirmed the piercing is fully healed. We offer a complimentary jewellery change-over service to ensure it's done safely.

What's Normal During Healing? (And What's Not)

It's normal to experience some of the following during the first few weeks:

  • Slight swelling, redness, tenderness, and minor bleeding.
  • Itching or the formation of a whitish-yellow fluid ("crusties") that is not pus. This is normal and can be gently cleaned away with saline.

When to Contact Us: Please get in touch immediately if you experience excessive pain, green or yellow pus, a bad odour, or a fever. These can be signs of an infection.

ALWAYS contact us if you are concerned about your piercing in any way! The only silly question is the one not asked.
