What to Do Before Your Tattoo Appointment

You don't grip the tattoo needle for years on end without learning the tricks of the trade. Sit back and relax as our team shares the best tips for preparing your body and skin for a tattoo.

1. Get a Good Night's Rest

Getting a good night's sleep before your appointment is a game-changer! It will help you feel more relaxed and mentally prepared for your session. Plus, being well-rested helps you handle the tattooing process like a champ!

2. Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential. Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment keeps your skin hydrated, making it more pliable for the artist's needle. This results in cleaner lines and a more comfortable experience.

3. Avoid Alcohol for 24 Hours

It's best to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before getting tattooed. Alcohol can thin the blood, which may increase bleeding during the process and affect the final quality of the tattoo. Save the celebration for after!

4. Wear Comfy Clothing

Comfort is key. Choose loose-fitting clothing that provides easy access to the area being tattooed. This allows the artist to work efficiently and helps you relax during the appointment, which can sometimes be lengthy.

5. Eat a Substantial Meal

Fuelling up before your appointment helps maintain your energy and blood sugar levels, keeping you comfortable and focused. For longer sessions, we highly recommend bringing some snacks and a drink with you.

6. Bring Entertainment

Depending on your tattoo's size, you may be in the studio for a few hours. We recommend bringing a book, downloading a podcast, or curating a playlist to keep your mind occupied and your body relaxed.

7. Moisturise Daily (But Not on the Day)

Moisturise the area regularly in the days leading up to your appointment to ensure your skin is hydrated and supple. However, on the day of your appointment, please do not apply any creams or lotions to the area being tattooed.

Other Important Pre-Care Tips

  • Avoid tanning or excessive sun exposure on the area for at least four weeks before your appointment.
  • Avoid using harsh exfoliants or scrubs on the area in the days leading up to your appointment.
  • If you need to shave the area, please do so at least 48 hours prior, not on the day of your session.
  • If you wish to use numbing cream, apply it 30-40 mins before arrival and cover it with cling wrap. This is optional and completely non-judged.
  • It is not recommended to get a tattoo while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Please note that these tips are general recommendations. If you have any pressing medical enquiries, please consult your general practitioner.
