Your IRONMAN 70.3 Finisher Tattoo: A Mooloolaba Guide
Share
Last Sunday, 13 September, Mooloolaba did what it does best. More than 2,000 athletes ran into the surf at Mooloolaba Beach for the 13th IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast: a 1.9km ocean swim, a 90km ride along the Sunshine Motorway, and a 21.1km run home along the Esplanade.
New Zealand took out both pro titles. Hannah Berry won the women's race in 4:05:33 and Trent Thorpe claimed his first 70.3 win in 3:42:33. But the real stars were the thousands of age-groupers, locals and visitors alike, who dragged themselves over that finish line after months of 5am alarms.
If that's you: congratulations. And if you've been thinking about marking it with ink, this one's for you.
The finisher tattoo tradition
Triathletes have a long tradition of getting inked after a big finish. The famous M-dot is the classic, usually on the calf, but plenty of athletes go for something more personal. And yes, a 70.3 absolutely counts. You swam, rode and ran 113km. You've earned it.
Fine line finisher tattoo ideas
Fine line is perfect for race tattoos because it can be small, subtle and meaningful all at once. A few ideas we love:
- "70.3" in delicate script on the ankle, wrist or behind the ear
- Your race date (13.09.26) in tiny numerals
- Your finish time, for the athletes who know exactly how hard every minute was
- A tiny wave, sun or swim-bike-run trio, a nod to Mooloolaba without spelling it out
- The coordinates of the finish line on the Esplanade

Timing your tattoo around training
This is the bit athletes forget. A fresh tattoo and a training block don't mix, so plan ahead:
- No swimming for at least two weeks. That means no ocean, no pool, no ice bath. Soaking a healing tattoo risks infection and ink loss.
- Go easy for the first few days. Heavy sweat sessions put bacteria on healing skin.
- Keep it out of the sun. Queensland UV fades fresh ink fast. Cover it on your long rides and runs.
The best window? Right now. Most athletes take a few weeks off after a big race, and that's exactly the recovery time a new tattoo needs. If you're already eyeing the Mooloolaba Triathlon in March, get inked well before your ocean swim training ramps up.

Placement tips for triathletes
- Ankle: gorgeous, but remember your timing chip strap sits there on race day. Let it heal fully first.
- Calf: the classic spot. Compression socks will rub while it heals, so skip them for a couple of weeks.
- Wrist: your watch strap sits right on top, so consider the inner forearm instead.
- Back of the neck: wetsuit zips and collars chafe here, so it's best saved for the off-season.
Keeping it crisp
Fine line is tattooed gently, so a little colour can sometimes drop out as it heals. That's why touch-ups are free when you pre-book them within 12 weeks of your tattoo (see our touch-up policy). After that, sunscreen is your tattoo's best friend. You're out in the sun more than most.
Ready to mark your finish?
Whether you crossed the line on Sunday, cheered from the Esplanade, or you're already signed up for next year, we'd love to help you celebrate. Send us a message on Instagram with your idea and we'll take it from there.
See you out there, and congratulations again to everyone who raced. Mooloolaba's proud of you.
