Permanent jewellery for men: styles, placement and gift ideas
Share
Permanent jewellery isn't just for the girls. More and more guys are walking into our Mooloolaba studio for a simple welded chain, and plenty of them walk out asking why they didn't do it sooner.
If you've been curious but weren't sure it was "for you", here's everything you need to know.
Why more men are getting permanent jewellery
Men's jewellery has been making a steady comeback for years. Think chains on footy players, musicians and the bloke at the café who looks a little more put together than everyone else. Permanent jewellery takes that trend and removes the hassle.
- Nothing to remember. No clasp, no taking it off, no losing it in the gym bag.
- Low maintenance. Wear it in the surf, in the shower and to bed. A quick rinse after salt water is about all it needs.
- It means something. Lots of guys choose a chain to mark something: a new baby, a wedding, a mate, a big birthday or a fresh start.
- It's quick and painless. About 15 to 20 minutes for one piece. You'll see a small spark as it's welded, but nothing touches your skin.
Chain styles that suit men
The key for most guys is a chain with a bit of presence. It should look intentional, not dainty. When you come in, our team will lay out the options and help you choose. Things to think about:
- Weight and thickness. A slightly bolder link reads as more masculine and sits nicely against a larger wrist. We stock heavier men's styles too, so there's plenty to choose from.
- Metal. We offer 14K gold-filled and sterling silver. Silver is the go-to for a cool, understated look. Gold-filled suits tanned Sunshine Coast skin and pairs well with a gold watch or ring.
- Keep it simple. Most men go charm-free. If you do want something extra, a single small charm or pendant from our in-studio range keeps it subtle.
Every piece is measured and welded to fit you comfortably, so it moves with you rather than sitting tight.
Bracelet, anklet or necklace?
Bracelet: the most popular choice for men. Wear it on the opposite wrist to your watch, or stack it next to a leather band for a relaxed look.
Anklet: made for barefoot beach days and board shorts. A permanent anklet suits surfers and runners who don't want anything on their hands, and it's easy to hide under socks when you need to.
Necklace: a clean chain sitting at the collarbone looks great with an open-neck shirt or a singlet. It's also a good middle ground if you're not a bracelet person.
Work with your hands, play contact sport or have a job with a no-jewellery rule? We can add a clasp to any chain so you can take it off when you need to. It's the same look with more flexibility. Our permanent jewellery FAQ covers this and more.
Gift ideas for him
Stuck on what to get the man who says he "doesn't need anything"? A permanent chain is a gift he'll wear every day.
- Father's Day or a new dad: a matching chain for him and the kids. We have no minimum age, and we recommend a clasp for little ones.
- Couples: matching bracelets in gold and silver, done together in one visit.
- Groomsmen: a chain for each of the boys instead of another engraved hip flask.
- Birthdays and Christmas: not sure he'll want it? A gift voucher lets him choose his own chain, metal and spot.
Looking after it
Men's jewellery gets a harder life, with gym sessions, tools, the surf and sunscreen. A few habits keep it looking sharp:
- Rinse with fresh water after the ocean or pool and pat it dry.
- Take care with heavy lifting and contact sports, where a chain can snag.
- Clean it now and then with mild soap and warm water. Silver can be brought back with a polishing cloth.
- If it ever breaks, keep the chain and bring it in. We can reweld it for a small fee.
