Which Ear Piercing Should I Get? A Guide to Every Placement
Share
So you've decided it's time for a new ear piercing. Exciting! Then comes the tricky bit: which one? Lobe, helix, conch, daith… the names alone can feel like a new language.
Here's a friendly run-down of the most popular placements, how they typically feel and heal, and how to build a curated ear stack you'll love for years. If you'd rather talk it through in person, come and see us for ear piercing in Mooloolaba.
First, a quick word on pain and healing
Everyone feels piercings differently, so treat the notes below as a general guide, not a promise. As a rule of thumb, soft fleshy spots (like the lobe) tend to feel quicker and heal faster, while cartilage usually feels sharper for a moment and takes longer to settle.
Healing also varies from person to person. Many piercings fully heal within 3–6 months, while others can take up to 12 months or longer.
The placements, one by one
- Lobe: the classic starting point. Most people describe it as a quick pinch, and it's usually the fastest to heal.
- Upper lobe: a second or third lobe hole sitting a little higher. Still soft tissue, so it tends to feel and heal much like your first lobe.
- Helix: the outer rim of cartilage at the top of your ear. A short, sharp sensation for most people, and a longer heal than a lobe. It's a favourite for dainty studs and, once healed, hoops.
- Forward helix: the small bit of cartilage at the front of the ear, just above where it meets your face. Gorgeous stacked two or three high. Expect a cartilage-style heal.
- Conch: the "bowl" in the middle of your ear. Thicker cartilage, so it can feel like more pressure, and it usually takes a while to heal.
- Tragus: the little flap in front of your ear canal. Many people say it sounds louder than it feels. Earbuds sit right next to it while it heals, so keep that in mind.
- Daith: the fold of cartilage just above the ear canal. It suits a small hoop and has a lovely tucked-in look. Anatomy matters here, so your piercer will check it suits you.
- Rook: the ridge of cartilage above the daith. It depends on having enough of a fold to work with, and it's known as one of the slower healers.
- Flat: the flat area of cartilage between the helix and the conch. A great spot for a statement stud or a cluster look.
Everyone's anatomy is different, so not every ear suits every placement. If your chosen spot isn't a great fit, your piercer can guide you to a lovely alternative on the day.
Building a curated ear stack
A curated ear is when your piercings are planned as one cohesive look instead of added at random. Think balanced spacing, jewellery that works together, and a layout that suits the shape of your ear.
Our curated service starts with a one-on-one consult. We'll photograph and mark potential placements, talk through your style (minimal, stacked or with chain details), and plan a sequence that respects healing. You'll leave with a clear plan covering which piercings to start with, when to add more and how to style them as you go.
A few tips for a stack that ages beautifully:
- Start with your anchors. A lobe or two plus one cartilage piece is a strong base to build from.
- Mix sizes. Tiny studs up high with slightly larger pieces lower down looks natural and balanced.
- Leave breathing room. Space between piercings makes future hoops and charms easier to wear.
- Think about your sleeping side. You'll want to avoid lying on fresh cartilage, so splitting new piercings across ears can help.
Keen on 3+ piercings on one ear in a single sitting? That's classed as a curation, so you'll need to book a curation consultation first. We'll work out whether they can all be done safely on the day or map out a plan over multiple sessions.
Your jewellery
Every initial piercing at our Sunshine Coast studio uses ASTM F136 titanium jewellery. It's hypoallergenic, lightweight and corrosion-resistant, which makes it a safe choice for healing.
Please don't change your jewellery yourself. Book a change-over once your piercer has confirmed you're fully healed. It's complimentary, and it's the perfect time to swap in that dreamy hoop.
Before you book
A little prep makes for a smoother experience. Eat within 4 hours of your appointment, skip alcohol beforehand, and let your piercer know if you tend to feel faint around needles. Our piercing pre-care advice has the full list, and our piercing aftercare guide covers what comes next.
