Your Child's First Ear Piercing: Age, What to Expect and Prep

Your child's first ear piercing is a big milestone. Maybe they've been asking for months, or maybe a birthday is coming up and it feels like the right time. Either way, you want it to be safe, calm and something they remember for all the right reasons.

Here's what to know about the right age, what happens on the day, and how to help your little one feel ready.

What's the right age?

At Tiny Tatts Co, the minimum age for any piercing is 5 years old. That's our studio policy and our professional recommendation, and there are a few good reasons for it:

  • Delicate, growing ears. Young children's ears are still developing. As ears grow, piercings done very early can sometimes look like they've "moved" or were placed in the wrong spot.
  • Caring for the piercing. Kids need to be able to keep their hands off and cope with a cleaning routine while it heals.
  • Consent. We believe a child should be able to understand the procedure and agree to a piercing on their own body.

So if your child is 5 or older but doesn't seem quite ready, that's completely fine. There's no rush, and we'll be here when they are.

What to bring on the day

Under our piercing age restrictions, anyone under 18 needs:

  • A parent or legal guardian at the appointment to give consent
  • A Medicare or healthcare card showing both the parent or guardian's name and the child's name
  • Valid photo ID for the parent or guardian

Pop them in your bag the night before so there's no last-minute scramble.

What to expect at the appointment

Our piercer will start with a chat to help you and your child feel comfortable. Then we'll mark the ears and check the placement with both of you. Nothing happens until you're both happy with the dots.

Once you've approved, the piercings are done quickly and safely using needles, never guns. For nervous kids, we offer tandem piercing: two piercers work at the same time so both ears are done in one go, at no extra cost. It means no waiting and wondering between ear one and ear two.

We use only hypoallergenic, medical-grade ASTM F136 titanium earrings, chosen with sensitive young skin in mind. And yes, there are lollies to finish and a bravery certificate to take home.

How to prepare your child

  • Talk about it calmly and truthfully. Let them know it may feel like a quick pinch, and then it's over. Keep the focus on the fun of choosing earrings.
  • Fuel up. Make sure they've had a good meal, are well rested and have had plenty of water.
  • Bring a comforter. A favourite toy to snuggle can make a big difference.
  • Stay relaxed yourself. Kids take their cues from you, so a calm parent helps make a calm child.
  • Let them decide. If they change their mind on the day, that's OK. It's their ears.

Aftercare for little ears

You'll go home with full aftercare instructions. The key points:

  • Clean twice a day with sterile saline solution, morning and night. No alcohol or peroxide.
  • No twisting or playing. Twisting can slow healing and introduce bacteria.
  • Skip pools, the ocean and high-contact sports for at least 2 weeks.
  • Sleep smart. A travel or donut pillow helps avoid pressure on fresh piercings.
  • Keep the earrings in for at least 6 weeks before changing them. We recommend booking our complimentary check-up so we can make sure the piercings have healed before any change-over.

If you notice redness, swelling or discomfort beyond normal healing, pop in and see us. If your child seems unwell, check in with your GP too.
